HC Deb 29 April 1974 vol 872 cc385-6W
Mr. McCusker

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what consideration has been given to the long-term problem of restoring normality in policing and other matters to areas of south Armagh such as Crossmaglen, Forkhill and Keady.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

As I said in the debate on 4th April, the Government's aim is to move as fast as possible in restoring the full responsibility for law and order to the Royal Ulster Constabulary. The Army rôle in the cases mentioned is still vital. But this can only be achieved—in the areas mentioned and in the Province as a whole—with the full co-operation of all the people of Northern Ireland.—[Vol. 871, c. 1465–7.]
