Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will take steps to ensure that large vessels of 5,000 tons and over are equipped with adequate navigational aids before entering the English Channel.

Mr. Clinton Davis

The English Channel lies mainly in international waters through which vessels have freedom of passage and only internationally-accepted requirements for the carriage of equipment apply. The United Kingdom is seeking through the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organisation to extend such requirements.
