22. Mr. Michael Shaw

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the progress of his consideration of the position of the pig industry, in particular regarding consideration of providing immediate cash to the industry to prevent a shortage of pigmeat products.

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will now make a further statement on the difficulties facing pig producers; and what action he proposes to take in that regard.

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, what progress he has made in his consideration of action to assist pig breeders to offset the rise in the cost of feedstuffs.

I refer the hon. Members to the statement my right hon. Friend made on 25th March following the meeting of the EEC Council of Agriculture Ministers on 21st to 23rd March.

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what long-term action he is considering to encourage investment in pig production in a situation where prices fall short of production costs.

I have already indicated that I shall be having talks with the interested organisations on the longer-term situation of the agricultural industry. These talks will naturally cover pig production as well as the other sectors of the industry.
