HC Deb 04 April 1974 vol 871 c443W
Sir B. Rhys Williams

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will ask the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure that all the necessary safety precautions are now being applied by airlines running scheduled services to and from British airports in respect of the DC10 aircraft they operate.

Mr. Clinton Davis

Such services are at present operated only by foreign airlines. Enforcement of safety standards is the responsibility of the State of registry, and the Civil Aviation Authority has neither the powers nor, I understand, the means to apply safety precautions in respect of the airworthiness of such aircraft. I am assured by the airlines concerned that they are applying all the necessary safety precautions.
