HC Deb 01 April 1974 vol 871 c265W
Mr. Grist

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the real value of £2,000 on 26th March 1964 and 26th March 1954, expressed in terms of current purchasing power.

Dr. Gilbert

The value at February 1974 prices of the goods and services which could have been purchased for £2,000 in March 1954 and March 1964 was about £4,800 and £3,700 respectively. Information on prices in March 1974 is not yet available. The estimates are based on the changes in the consumers' expenditure deflator between 1954 and 1962 and thereafter in the General Index of Retail Prices.
