HC Deb 25 October 1973 vol 861 c569W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has any easily available estimates of the backlog of unanswered tax correspondence.

Mr. Nott

Information is not available for the Department as a whole, but in the local offices of the Chief Inspector of Taxes' Branch, on 11th October 1973, some 392,000 items of correspondence, including inter-office memoranda, had been on hand for over 14 days. A similar total would be received in the Chief Inspector's Branch in two days from the public alone.
