asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people classified by the Inland Revenue as single persons are in each of the following categories: (a) unmarried women, (b) unmarried men, (c) widows, (d) widowers, (e) divorced men, (f) divorced women, (g) separated men and (h) separated women, respectively.

Single males 4,601
Single females, excluding widows 3,168
Widows 752

Single males include unmarried men, widowers, divorced men and separated men not supporting a wife; single females include unmarried women, divorced and separated women. It is not possible to distinguish these sub-groups within the totals shown.
