Mr. Leadbitter

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what survey methods were adopted by his Department to conclude the average total weekly household income as £35.61 in the Northern Region.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

The figure of £35.61 is the average total weekly household income in the Northern Region as reported in the Family Expenditure Survey in 1972. The information was obtained by interview from the members of households who co-operated in the survey and who were living at a sample of addresses selected so as to be fully representative of the region. To obtain a reliable average figure for the year the interviewing of households was spread evenly throughout the year.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what proposals he has to produce a detailed analysis of income levels in households in the Northern Region.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

An analysis of households in the Northern Region by ranges of average total weekly household income has been published in Table 60 of the Family Expenditure Survey Report for 1972. The appropriate extract of that table is reproduced below.
