Mr. Biffen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the percentage increase in fat cattle prices at the latest available date compared with the corresponding date one year ago; and what are the corresponding percentage differences in the retail prices of beef.

The average auction market price of clean cattle was £18.22 per live cwt. during September 1973 and was £18.16 in the week ending 16th October. The September average was an increase of 24 per cent, over September 1972. The increase in price of various retail cuts of home-killed beef between mid-September 1972 and 1973 has been as follows: —
