HC Deb 25 October 1973 vol 861 cc605-6W
Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if, in view of the high rate of outward migration from Cardiganshire of school leavers and young people under the age of 25 years, he will conduct a special survey of this problem in the county.

Mr. Dudley Smith

My right hon. Friend has no plans to conduct such a survey. He expects the Government's economic and social policies to increase the attractiveness of Cardiganshire and Mid-Wales generally and reduce the rate of outward migration.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the average rate of unemployment in the Aberystwyth, Cardigan and Lampeter areas of Cardiganshire, respectively.

Mr. Dudley Smith

On 8th October the rates were 3.4 per cent. for Aberystwyth, 4.7 per cent. for Cardigan and 7.3 per cent. for Lampeter and Llan-dyssul. Rates of unemployment can be calculated for the Lampeter and Llan-dyssul travel-to-work area as a whole but not separately for its constituent parts. The figures are provisional.
