§ Mr. Iremongerasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth 166W Affairs what representations he has made to the Spanish Government about delays in bringing charges against, and refusal of bail to, Her Majesty's subjects detained in Spanish prisons by the Spanish authorities.
§ Mr. AmeryThe Embassy in Madrid has made representations to the Spanish authorities with a view to speeding up the trials of British subjects in Spain or, in suitable cases, allowing them provisional liberty while their cases are under investigation.
British subjects abroad, however, are subject to the laws of the country in which they are living, and we have to accept that judicial processes are slower in some countries than in others. British subjects cannot necessarily expect to receive more favourable treatment than that given to local and other nationals.
