HL Deb 06 November 1973 vol 346 c348WA
THE EARL OF LONGFORD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the maximum pay received per week (a) in men's prisons; (b) in Holloway women's prisons; and (c) in other women's prisons.

THE MINISTER OF STATE, HOME OFFICE (VISCOUNT COLVILLE OF CULROSS)

During the week ending September 30 the highest earnings by any prisoner in England and Wales were (a) £2.19 in a man's prison; (b) 75½p in H.M. Prison Holloway; and (c) 84p in a woman's prison. Under all pay schemes the same rates of pay apply to men and women but these figures reflect the fact that it has not yet been possible to introduce work-study-based earnings schemes into any women's prisons.

House adjourned at twenty-eight minutes past eight o'clock.
