Offences recorded as known to the police in England and Wales 1972 Violence against the person 52,432 Robbery and assault with intent to rob 8,926 Sexual offences 23,505 All other offences 1,277,099 Total 1,361,962 The number of offences recorded as known to the police in England and Wales 131W in 1972 was 3.5 per cent. greater than in 1971, after adjustment of the 1971 figure to allow for changes in legislation and recording practice. The number of offences cleared up in 1972 expressed as a percentage of those recorded as known was 41.1 per cent.
