Mr. Ted Fletcherasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the additional office space made available through new office development in London from 1964 to the nearest available date on an annual basis.
§ Mr. EyreEstimates prepared by my Department on the basis of figures collected by the Inland Revenue for rating purposes show the following net increases in office floor space in London for the periods shown:
Million square feet 1964–65 4.1 1965–66 4.3 1966–67 4.6 1967–68 5.2 It is further estimated, using provisional data from the same source, that the average net increase between 1968–69 and 1971–72 was of the order of 4¼ million square feet a year.
The figures include offices in commercial, local government and central government use, but exclude those in industrial premises and those of most nationalised bodies, public utilities and transport undertakings; the space measured is the net internal area excluding corridors, lifts, staircases, etc.
