HL Deb 25 July 1973 vol 344 cc1926-7WA
THE EARL OF LONGFORD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What figures are available to show the relative unemployment among young black people and the national average:

  1. (a) in England and Wales, and
  2. (b) in the London area.

LORD DRUMALBYN

I regret that there is no exact information available about the numbers of young black people who are unemployed; but figures are available about young people who were born, or whose parents were born in Africa, West Indies, India, Pakistan or certain other Commonwealth countries.

On May 14, 1973, the latest date for which figures are available, the number of such young people registered as unemployed in England and Wales was 733, and of these 328 were in Greater London. These figures represent 3.7 per cent. and 18.1 per cent. of all unemployed young people in England and Wales and Greater London respectively on that date.
