asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will refrain from taking any steps to require the adoption of metric weights for foodstuffs on sale to the public until the ing offers the best export prospects in the USSR; and what type of machinery, equipment or services he has in mind.

I believe that there are good prospects for exports in the field of environmental engineering because the Soviet Government have in recent years shown considerable interest in the question of environmental pollution generally and, more particularly, are giving increased attention to the massive task of updating their urban sewage control systems. There are a number of relevant fields where British technology has much to offer.
