Independent Television (Levy)

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what conclusion he has reached about the levy on independent television.

The Government have concluded that the revenue raised from the independent television companies through the levy should be increased. In view of the objections to increasing the levy on the existing basis the Government have authorised the IBA to discuss with the companies a new system under which the levy would be assessed on profits instead of on advertising revenue. The intention is that legislation should be introduced in the autumn and the new system brought into effect as soon as possible.
