HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 cc393-4W
Mr. Costain

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in view of the fact that two live mines have fouled the nets of fishermen trawling off Folkestone recently, what steps he is taking to protect fishermen against the consequent dangers.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

Notice to Mariners No. 6 of 1973 promulgates what fishermen should do when they pick up mines in their nets. To supplement this we are arranging for fishermen to receive copies of an instructional poster which will shortly be issued by the Ministry of Defence. Following the reports of mines off Folkestone, HMS "Gavington", a Royal Navy mine countermeasures vessel, carried out a search in the area but no further mines were found.
