HL Deb 24 July 1973 vol 344 c1816WA
LORD BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in view of the recognised evasions of true population figures for many households in the last Census, steps are currently being taken to secure correction of doubtful returns in the light of the more complete information now available; and whether it can be accepted that all discoveries of illegal entrants will attract prompt action such as the law requires.

LORD ABERDARE

Checks being carried out on the last Census do not support suggestions that there was widespread under-counting of the population. These checks are of a statistical character and are not designed to secure the correction of individual Census returns.

All Census information is used solely for statistical purposes and plays no part in discovering illegal immigrants.
