Mr. David Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what work is being undertaken by the Health Education Unit to promote the practice of breast-feeding of babies;

(2) what guidance is given by his Department to expectant mothers about breast-feeding their children.

The advantages of breast feeding are pointed out to expectant mothers by doctors, midwives and health visitors.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what research is being undertaken to investigate the reasons for the number of cot deaths of babies who are bottle fed.

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths is undertaking research into cot deaths from all causes.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what research is being undertaken to investigate the incidence of gastroenteritis in babies who are bottle fed.

Mr. Alison

I am not aware of any research on this subject.

If the hon. Member knows of any evidence that suggests a need for such research I should be grateful if he would communicate it to me.
