Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what Government grant is given towards the cost of building a new freeway;

(2) what grant is given towards the cost of converting an existing road into a freeway.

Mr. Speed

I understand that "freeway" is a local Huddersfield expression for proposed radial roads in the area. The construction and improvement of such roads if approved as principal road schemes will attract a grant of 75 per cent. of approved expenditure.
