HC Deb 09 July 1973 vol 859 c269W
Mr. Robert Edwards

asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many civil servants have their wages or salaries paid directly by cheque; and what proportion this is of all civil servants.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

We have no precise central records of this information, and it would be disproportionately expensive to collect it; but a recent statistical sample covering about three-quarters of all civil servants suggests that rather over 95 per cent. of monthly-paid staff, and about 40 per cent. of non-industrial and 20 per cent. of industrial weekly-paid staff, receive their wages or salaries by means other than cash payment including bank credit transfer.
