Mr. Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many work permits in industry and commerce for unskilled and semi-skilled alien men from all countries, other than the European Economic Community, Norway and Denmark, were issued during 1972; if he will list the categories for which they were issued; how many permits for skilled work were issued for aliens from those countries during the same period; and if he will list the categories of work for which they were issued.

A total of 21,962 permits were issued for foreigners—other than those from the EEC, Norway and Denmark—to take work in industry and commerce in 1972. An estimate of the division into the categories required is set out below:
