§ Mr. Alfred Morrisasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions he has had, or will be having, with the National Farmers' Unions concerning the future of guaranteed prices for beef cattle; if he will now confirm that farmers will continue to be entitled 30W to deficiency payments if and when beef prices fall; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Anthony StodartSuch issues are for consideration at the Annual Review. Discussions with the farmers' unions are taking place just now, and a statement at this time would be inappropriate.
§ Sir G. Nabarroasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what action he proposes to take in connection with the findings of the special committee of inquiry into beef prices that the principal beneficiary of high prices is the British farmer; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Anthony StodartMy right hon. Friend met the President of the National Farmers' Union immediately after he received the committee's report, in order to discuss what action could be taken on the recommendation. Under present free auction market conditions action to control cattle prices is not practical. Increased returns for beef are among the factors for consideration in the Annual Review. Like the committee, we hope that recent price levels will bring the further stimulus to beef production which is the best hope of avoiding future shortages.
