HL Deb 20 December 1973 vol 348 c578WA
LORD INGLEWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What check they are in a position to exercise on projects such as the initial expenditure of £300,000 on adapting existing buildings on a 280-acre so-called farm interpretation centre such as, according to Press reports, the G.L.C. propose to implement near Uxbridge.

BARONESS YOUNG

The proposal to establish a farm interpretation centre at Hillingdon by adapting an existing farm unit is included in the Greater London Council (General Powers) Bill which is now before Parliament. The relationship between the powers that the G.L.C. are seeking and existing legislation, such as the Green Belt (London and Home Counties) Act 1938 under which the Secretary of State for the Environment has certain powers, is at present being examined by the Department. If the provision in the Bill is opposed by petitioners the proposal will go before a Select Committee who will hear the case for and against it; if unopposed it will be subject to the scrutiny of the Unopposed Bill Committee in the ordinary way.
