HL Deb 11 December 1973 vol 347 c1150WA
LORD MILFORD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How they evaluate the new Greek military coup and whether they have issued any new instructions to their representatives in Athens in order to help the Greek people in their struggle for democracy and respect of human rights.

LORD STRATHCONA AND MOUNT ROYAL

The new regime which took power in Greece in the military coup to which the noble Lord refers satisfies our normal criteria for recognition. We are therefore conducting business with it.

As was stated by my honourable friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in another place on the 28th November, the previous Greek Government were well aware of our hope that Greece will be restored to full democratic processes. The new Government must be equally aware of our attitude.

House adjourned at eleven minutes past eight o'clock.
