§ Miss Quennellasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of every £ sterling of tax paid by British taxpayers will be represented by expenditure in respect of the Channel Tunnel in the current year and next year, respectively.
§ Mr. PeytonI have been asked to reply.
No substantial net direct public expenditure is expected to be incurred on 48W the Channel Tunnel. Certain sums to be spent on land purchase this year and next will, however, not be recovered until later; they represent less than one hundredth of 1 per cent. for every £1 collected in tax.
