asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he will announce his decision on the public inquiry held in July 1972 on the Ports-wood Link, Southampton.

The Department was advised in a letter dated 14th September that the Southampton City Council had resolved to abandon the scheme. My right hon. and learned Friend is now considering what effect this will have on his own motorway proposal in the vicinity. A reply to the city council's letter will be sent shortly.
