HC Deb 04 December 1973 vol 865 c352W
Mr. Stainton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the variation in the original specific gravity of all beer as reported in each of the past five years by the Customs and Excise ; and to what extent changes have been due to differing sales of draught and packaged beers and lager.

Mr. Higgins

The average original specific gravity of all beer marketed in the United Kingdom in each of the last five years was :

Revenue year Average gravity (degrees)
1968–69 1037.14
1969–70 1036.99
1970–71 1036.86
1971–72 1036.88
1972–73 1036.98

The statistical records of original gravities do not distinguish between different types of beer.
