asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many applications for assistance relating to Sunderland have been recommended by the Northern Industrial Development Board ; and what is the number of jobs they are expected to provide in three years.

Apart from the assistance to Sunderland Shipbuilders of £9 million already announced, assistance of £224,000 has been offered in respect of five projects in the Sunderland and Southwick employment exchange areas involving about 580 new jobs. Most of these new jobs are expected to be created in the next three years.
