§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, in order to avoid the humiliation suffered by children whose parents cannot afford school uniforms and clothes and equipment needed for sport, she will introduce legislation to make it obligatory upon local education authorities to make grants towards the purchase of all these items.
§ Mrs. ThatcherI think that this is better left to the exercise of the discretionary powers which local education authorities have.
