HC Deb 09 April 1973 vol 854 c230W
Mr. MacArthur

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the next steps in the Government's housing policies for Scotland.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

These are outlined in the White Paper "Homes for People: Scottish Housing Policy in the 1970s" (Cmnd. 5272, April 1973) which I have presented to Parliament today. The main features are:

  • —widening the role of local authorities, in assessing housing needs in their areas comprehensively, and adopting policies for meeting them, and in housing management;
  • —further development of the private sector;
  • —improving the quality of new and older houses, and their environment, with a renewed drive on slum clearance;
  • —enlarging the choice of homes available in Scotland.

The Government intend to pursue these policies with vigour.
