HC Deb 25 October 1972 vol 843 cc312-3W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans the Government have to set up a Department of Nautical Archaeology within the National Maritime Museum or in some other suitable institution.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The organisation of the National Maritime Museum, as of the other national museums and galleries, is a matter for the Trustees. I am aware that they have growing interests in nautical archaeology, principally in relation to ships' structures. Most of the national museums will conitnue to be concerned with objects in their fields recovered from historic wrecks.
