§ Q12. Mr. Fowlerasked the Prime Minister whether he will recommend the issue of a public service medal to all members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
§ The Prime MinisterMembers of the Royal Ulster Constabulary are eligible for police awards, either for gallantry or distinguished service. They are also eligible for awards in the British Empire Order, again either for gallantry or distinguished service, and for national gallantry awards such as the George Cross and the George Medal. I fully recognise the steadfast service which members of the RUC continue to give in the very difficult conditions of Northern Ireland, but I am not convinced that there should be a general award in addition to the many individual awards that have been and will continue to be made.
