HC Deb 23 October 1972 vol 843 cc182-3W
Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will introduce approach noise monitoring at London Airport (Heathrow), on the lines operating at Frankfurt and Los Angeles.

Mr. Onslow

I have nothing to add to the reply given to the hon. Member on 20th October last.—[Vol. 843, c.157–8.]

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if, in view of the fact that when the approach noise of Concorde 002 was independently measured on its recent visit to Australia the aircraft proved to be 33 times as noisy as a Boeing 727 or DC 9, he will ascertain how many times as noisy as these aircraft the Concorde will be when fitted with its new engines.

Mr. Onslow

The Concorde prototype would have sounded between two and three times as noisy as the Boeing 727 and DC 9. But it is misleading to compare Concorde's noise with these aircraft. The truer comparison is with subsonic aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and DC 8, and the manufacturers are confident that noise levels of the production Concorde will be comparable with these aircraft.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what amount of noise monitoring of landing aircraft has taken place recently at Heathrow, London Airport; and if he will instruct that regular and permanent noise monitoring of all landing aircraft be instituted forthwith.

Mr. Onslow

Noise monitoring on landing has been carried out recently only for special purposes by special arrangement. On the second part of the Question, I have nothing to add to the reply given to the hon. Member on 20th October last.—[Vol. 843, c.157–8.]
