§ Mrs. Sally Oppenheimasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will list successful prosecutions under the Trade Descriptions Act, 1968, since the Act became operative, giving the names of firms convicted, and stating how many of the prosecutions were not investigated by the weights and meaures inspectors.
§ Sir G. HoweOnly local weights and measures authorities have to notify me of their intention to prosecute under the Act; they are, however, responsible for almost all such prosecutions. Up to 31st May, 1972, 3,870 prosecutions had been notified, 3,418 of which resulted in a conviction. It would not be appropriate 45W for me to give further publicity to the names of firms convicted, many of which have already appeared in Press reports.
