HC Deb 06 November 1972 vol 845 cc67-8W
Miss Devlin

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the expenditure on food per prisoner per week in Leicester Prison.

Mr. Carlisle

A full and varied diet is provided in Leicester prison, as in other prisons. But, by reason of centrally arranged contracts which offer very competitive prices, and because certain items of food, notably vegetables, are produced economically within the prisons themselves, the approximate cost of food to feed a prisoner in Leicester prison is kept as low as about £1.20 a week.

Miss Devlin

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the expenditure on food per dog per week for security dogs in Leicester Prison.

Mr. Carlisle

There are six dogs at Leicester. Each of them is provided with 1½ lb. of meat bought by the dog handler and 1 lb. of biscuits a day. The cost of this food for each dog amounts to about £2.50 a week.
