HC Deb 24 May 1972 vol 837 c391W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations have been made to him regarding the desirability of preserving in use older milestones and signposts when standardised continental signs are introduced; and if he will advise local authorities to continue to use them.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

The Council for British Archaeology has made representations about the conservation of milestones and signposts. My Department issued a circular to highway authorities in November, 1971, asking them to preserve milestones wherever this is possible without detriment to road safety. The retention of signposts is being reviewed by the Department, but it is unlikely that old signposts could remain on major traffic routes.
