§ Mr. Eldon GriffithsThe Council for British Archaeology has made representations about the conservation of milestones and signposts. My Department issued a circular to highway authorities in November, 1971, asking them to preserve milestones wherever this is possible without detriment to road safety. The retention of signposts is being reviewed by the Department, but it is unlikely that old signposts could remain on major traffic routes.
