Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) on how many occasions it has been necessary to close two of the southbound lanes of the M6 in Staffordshire in the past 12 months;

(2) on how many occasions it has been necessary to close one of the southbound lanes of the M6 in Staffordshire in the past 12 months;

(3) on how many occasions it has been necessary to close two of the northbound lanes of the M6 in Staffordshire in the past 12 months;

(4) on how many occasions it has been necessary to close one of the northbound lanes of the M6 in Staffordshire in the past 12 months;

(5) on how many days all three southbound lanes of the M6 in Staffordshire were open in the past 12 months;

(6) on how many days all three northbound lanes of the M6 in Staffordshire were open in the past 12 months.

Detailed information about the number of lane closures of the M6 in Staffordshire is not readily available but I will write to my hon. Friend as soon as possible.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the reasons for lane closures on the M6 in Staffordshire in the past 12 months.

The reasons for lane closures were as follows:

  1. 1. Continuous closure of one lane in each direction at Bescot during the reappraisal and examination of the box girder viaduct.
  2. 2. Re-jointing and surface repairs to the concrete section on the Stafford Bypass.
  3. 3. Renewal of lamp brackets on the Walsall section.
  4. 4. Closure of two lanes in each direction to permit resurfacing on a hot rolled asphalt section in North Staffordshire.
  5. 5. Closure of one lane in each direction for the installation of safety barriers, on the central reserve.
  6. 6. Closure of one lane in each direction for filling in light-wells in the central reserve providing light in underpasses.
  7. 7. Routine maintenance work of all kinds.
  8. 8. Accidents.
