HC Deb 04 May 1972 vol 836 c178W
Captain Orr

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many cases of religious discrimination have been established during the last two years in Northern Ireland by the Commissioner of Complaints.

Mr. Channon

One.

Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will investigate allegations of discrimination on public boards, the judiciary and industry in Northern Ireland, and in particular at Harland and Wolff.

Mr. David Howell

Allegations of discrimination by public boards in providing equality of employment opportunity are investigated by the Northern Ireland Parliamentary Commissioner for Complaints.

Appointments to the Supreme Court have always been a reserved matter for my right hon. noble and learned Friend the Lord Chancellor. As respects other judicial appointments it would not be appropriate for me to comment on appointments made in the past.

As regards allegations of discrimination in private industry, discussions are taking place with both sides of industry as to the best method of tackling the problem. These include the situation at Harland and Wolff.
