Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are covered by the Engineering Industry Training Board in the Midlands.

Mr. Dudley Smith:

I understand from the Engineering Industry Training Board that firms in the region in scope of the Board in April, 1971, employed 899,875 people.

Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people have undertaken engineering training and retraining in the area covered by the Midlands regional office of the Engineering Industry Training Board in each of the last five years.

Mr. Dudley Smith:

The numbers of people who have completed engineering training and retraining in Government training centres in the Midlands Region are:

Year Number of People
1967 373
1968 455
1969 514
1970 533
1971 632

I understand from the Engineering Industry Training Board that the numbers of people who have received training by engineering employers in the region leading to claims for grants are:

Year Number of People
1967–68 128,845
1968–69 161,043
1969–70 183,121

Figures for 1970–71 are not yet available. Separate figures for engineering for 1966–67 are not available.

Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employement whether he will estimate the number of engineering firms in the area of the Midlands regional office of the Engineering Industry Training Board who undertake no training.

Mr. Dudley Smith:

The number cannot be estimated precisely. I understand from the Engineering Industry Training Board that in 1969–70 1,660 of the firms in the region which were assessed to levy did not claim grants for training qualifying for grant.

Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many firms in the area covered by the Midlands regional office of the Engineering Industry Training Board, and employing 200 people or more, undertake group training.

Mr. Dudley Smith:

I understand from the Engineering Industry Training Board that 189 such engineering firms are members of group training schemes.
