asked Her Majesty's Government:

To provide figures (where appropriate on the bases used in Appendix 2 of Cmnd. 3888) for 1971 of:

  1. (i) the number of stoppages of work due to industrial disputes (distinguishing between coal mining and the rest of the economy); the number of workers involved and the number of days lost;
  2. (ii) the number of stoppages known to have been official; with again the number of workers involved and the number of days lost;
  3. (iii) the total number of strikes and the number of official strikes respectively (with in each case the number of such strikes per 100,000 employees and the number of days lost per 1,000 employees) in (a) all industries, and (b) the following areas of employment—coal mining; port and inland water transport; ship building, ship repairing and marine engineering; motor vehicle manufacturing; engineering other than motor vehicle manufacturing; the postal service; and the remainder of the economy.
