§ 45. Sir J. Langford-Holtasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many solid and other pollutants are emitted daily from electricity generating stations in the United Kingdom; what Government action is being taken to reduce this; and when the process of reduction will be completed.
§ Graham PageMr. Figures for daily emissions are not available, but annual emissions for all electricity generating stations throughout England and Wales are estimated at about 2½ million tons of sulphur dioxide and 200,000 tons of particulate matter. These figures are too high; they nevertheless reveal a marked improvement during recent years, bearing in mind the increase in fuel consumption. Further reductions will be achieved as new stations replace older ones but this is a continuing process and there is no completion date.
