HL Deb 24 July 1972 vol 333 c1215WA
LORD REIGATE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give notice now to the Westminster City Council and the developer that it is the intention of the Secretary of State for the Environment to " call in " any planning applications for the sites of the Grand Hotel and Trafalgar Buildings in Trafalgar Square at the entrance to Northumberland Avenue, in view of the national importance of this site.

LORD SANDFORD

I understand that Westminster City Council have told the owners of these two sites that any new buildings on them must be consistent with the existing scale of Trafalgar Square, properly related to each other, and of the highest merit. They will not grant planning permission without first consulting my right honourable friend, who will thus have an opportunity of considering whether the relevant applications should be called in.
