asked the Secretary of State for the Environment in how many of the 229,181 cases of unlicensed road vehicles reported in 1971 legal action for enforcement was taken; and with what results.

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to him on 16th June. The prosecutions led to the imposition of penalties of £357,173 and the recovery of £240,302 in arrears of duty. £206,280 was paid in mitigated penalties.—[Vol. 136, c. 424.]
