§ Mr. AlisonAt 1st October, 1971, the total number of general practitioners was 1,788, of whom 230 were born outside the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. A single-handed practice is vacant and action has been taken to fill it. Partnership practices have been given approval to replace 34 outgoing general practitioners; a few have already taken in an assistant with a view to partnership.

These are provisional figures relating to 30th September, 1971, but they represent increases of 5.0 per cent. in the number of doctors employed and 1.9 per cent. in the number of those born outside the United Kingdom and Irish Republic, compared with the figures at 30th September, 1970.
