asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) What sum they are making available through the Home Office to the Urban Aid Programme, currently scheduled to end in 1976;
  2. (b) How much of this money will have been allocated to specific projects under the Programme by the end of 1972;
  3. (c) Whether the sums to be allocated between January, 1973, and the end of 1976 will be allocated in approximately equal amounts each year;
  4. (d) Whether, in any circular inviting applications for this money, they will make clear the amount which is available in each given phase or year.

THE MINISTER OF STATE, HOME OFFICE (VISCOUNT COLVILLE OF CULROSS)

The information is as follows:

  1. (a) Public expenditure in Great Britain on the Urban Programme is estimated at £21.6 million at 1972 prices for the period 1968–69 to 1971–72. The latest forecast of expenditure for 1972–73 to 1975–76 is some £55 million at 1972 prices. Her Majesty's Government recently authorised a modest increase in the Programme so that approval could be given in the current phase to additional projects costing up to £1.8 million.
  2. (b) By the end of 1972 approximately £28.75 million will have been allocated to approved projects in Great Britain, excluding running and other continuing costs.
