HC Deb 20 December 1972 vol 848 c389W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what works of art he has recently accepted in lieu of estate duty under the provisions of Section 34 of the Finance Act 1956.

Mr. Nott

I am glad to announce that the paiting "St. Anthony of Padua" by Murillo which is considered to be preeminent for its aesthetic merit has been so accepted. The total cost to the National Land Fund, after allowing for exemption from estate duty and capital gains tax, is £35,000.

My noble Friend the Paymaster-General, after taking advice from the Standing Commission, will in due course announce the decision on the destination of this painting.
