asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students are registered for degree courses with the Council for National Academic Awards; and what is the annual cost to the Exchequer of the Council.

Figures supplied by the Council for National Academic Awards as given below:

Students registered for first degree courses (session 1972–73) 34,189
Students registered for postgraduate courses leading to the award of the Council's masters degrees (session 1972–73) 583
Candidates registered for the Council's research degrees (31st December 1971) 1,062

In addition, 96 students have registered in the session 1972-73 for courses leading to a postgraduate diploma of the council (a new type of qualification). There is no cost to the Exchequer.
