asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will introduce legislation to amend the Local Government Act 1972 to ensure that teachers in polytechnics and colleges of education, who are at present eligible to serve as councillors on the authorities to which the institutions are responsible, are able to take office on the council which will supersede them.

No. The provisions of the Act dealing with the disqualification of local government employees were fully debated in Parliament and I have no plans to introduce further legislation on this point.
